Keep tuning in for more deals.  (By the way, check us out at the Santa House this weekend on Main Street Brookings!)

November 28, 2008

This is really written on the 27th, so we're fudging a bit on the date.  Still, some good news....  GROUP - the musical written by owner Heidi and Aaron (hey - scroll down if you don't know who we mean!) has many opportunities coming soon.  We are THANKFUL that their hard work over many years keeps getting positive attention!

November 27, 2008

Hey!  Side note:  Heidi's sister and family is sitting in the bleachers at the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade.  Look out for them on TV!

November 26, 2008

Remember, we're closed Thursday and Friday.  We'll be giving thanks for all that we have. We hope you find time between turkey and football to do the same.  HAPPY THANKSGIVING!

November 23, 2008

Yeah, yeah.....Thanksgiving is here.  And we all look forward to it.  But do the stores have to already be playing Christmas songs since last week?  Too soon.... too soon.  Still.  Most important thing is to be thankful.  What for?  Look all around.  There are thousands of things.  Happy Thanksgiving week!

November 20, 2008
Ok, so this isn't an 'official' internet special...yet.  But we like to have fun, too.  And we like the holidays a bit too much.  SOOOOO.....the first email we receive from a person age 9-15 which describes a favorite THANKSGIVING Memory (about anything THANKSGIVING) will receive 2 free piano, voilin, or voice lessons.  We choose the first person who writes at least a nice paragraph or two (or more) about a THANKSGIVING memory that makes them happy.  While we won't post your name, we may post some of your memory!  The two free lessons are in addition to regularly scheduled lessons or scheduled over two weeks for new students.  Good luck. Yes, anybody can win.  Just a case of "who sees this first!"  (Don't bother calling to check.  We won't tell if somebody already entered, but will post it here in coming days!)

November 19, 2008

So while the November 13 special offer is in effect thru Dec. 10, we'll have many more holiday deals in the coming weeks!   All because we love the holidays!

And we are proud to welcome all young believers to visit the Let's Play Santa House on Main Street in Brookings once again this year!   We had so many compliments last year, and we had so much fun, that we're doing it once again!  Check out the Calendar section for dates/times.  Parents bring cameras, and little ones bring their Christmas letters (you can even deliver them to Santa here should he not be around).  HO HO HO!

November 15, 2008
Check out the Calendar section for important dates coming up regarding studio!

November 13, 2008

Let's Play reminds you that we do have gift certificates available this year, once again.

.

November 12, 2008

Yesterday I could stand at the top of my driveway and slide down it without moving my feet, due to the 1/4 inch of ice covering everything.  But that was yesterday.

Schools back in session today, folks!

November 11, 2008

1) Happy Veterans Day!  Take a moment to thank a veteran in person, or silently that they have given so much for us and our country.

2) No Classes Today.  Per our Winter Weather Policy, we do not hold classes when in an active Blizzard Warning, nor when classes are canceled in Brookings due to weather that same day.  Such is the case today.  Students effected by todays cancellation should sign up at the studio during future visits for make-up times offered.  In the meantime, drive safely today!

November 9, 2008
Wow!  What a wonderful job so many of our students did at our recital this weekend!  We saw pianists, vocalists, instrumentalists, and performers of all types take to the stage at the Performing Arts Center.  A very impressive group of people, and we thank you for sharing your talent with the audiences that day!

It's always fun to see fresh faces who have never performed at a recital alongside those who are seasoned pros.  We get to see the start of budding talents at the same time we track the growth of those talents.  And we are proud that you keep building yourselves through your involvement in the arts.  And that you trust us to lead you!  THANK YOU and CONGRATULATIONS!

November 5, 2008
CONGRATULATIONS if your party/persons/issues won yesterday!
WE'RE SO SORRY if your party/persons/issues didn't win yesterday!

November 4, 2008

A note to those of voting age:  If you don't vote, you can't complain for the next four years!

November 1, 2008

Remember trick or treating when you were little?  It seemed like the most popular candy by far was plain old, hard, lost-its-flavor-right-away GUM.  Handfuls of that stuff every year.  This year, our daughter got 3 pieces of it.  It's like it's as hard to find as it is to chew.

No complaints here, however.  Snickers bars seem to be much more popular!

October 31, 2008
Yes, we are just a bunch of kids.  The studio is closed so we can all have a day of tricks or treats! BOO!

October 29, 2008

What a fantastic time of year!  And for once we will have actual nice temperatures and weather during Halloween.

One of the best things about having a child is getting to revisit your own childhood thru their eyes.  So while our daughter is excited to be a Pink Poodle on Halloween, I can't help but think of all the costumes donned as a child.  One time in the very late 70's or early 80's I recall a blizzard hitting town on Halloween.  My mother drove me from house to house for a couple of blocks so I could still get some candy.  And so here was this ghost, with a sheet on over a winter coat, running up driveways to get some candy, then back to the car to drive 20 ft. to the next house.

Well, this Halloween will be nice weather.  So we'll get to go to many more houses.  Just look for the Pink Poodle at a house near you.  Gotta go.  Time to carve a pumpkin!

October 12, 2008

To reiterate: we are not now renting costumes.  We are not SELLING costumes that were formerly professional rentals.  So they are very high quality, and very cheap!  Thought we'd clear that up!

October 5, 2008

Let's Play Costumes is now open!  We have lots of fun costumes to choose from, all at VERY low prices!  Our hours have changed from original plans, and are as follows: Mon-Tue 9am-12pm, Thur-Fri 12-6p and Sat 10am-5pm.  We're closed Wed and Sun.  With only a few weeks until Halloween, get in early to get best choices.  Unlike other places where there are Halloween costumes, all of our items are individuals.  There are not 20 of the same thing.  So when one sells, that choice is gone.  Also, a lot of our items are adult sizes right now, but note that we have many new items coming soon - many of which are for our little trick-or-treaters.  Also, know that even many of the "adult size" costumes still fit most ages.

Halloween is on a Friday this year.  So get ready to haunt the town with a fun costume!

September 29, 2008

Tentatively thru Halloween, we believe the Costume Shop will be open Tue-Fri 2-8pm, and Sat. 10am-2pm.  Hopefully, we'll be up and running within the next couple of days - as new inventory keeps arriving!

September 20, 2008

Now the details:  Just in time for Halloween, we're opening the Let's Play Costume Shop in the front area of our school location.  We will offer professional costumes that were previously only rentals as well as new costumes, make-up, masks, etc.  The previously rented items are now for sale only, meaning something that originally cost a LOT more, can now be yours for Halloween.  We have items for most ages, and will be bringing in new items quite often.

In fact, after Halloween, we will begin rentals of costumes.  Things such as costumes for churches pageants, youth groups, area productions, and more will be found at the same place that has already spent years educating and entertaining in the arts.

And one more difference between our costumes and other options:  we are the "no gore store."  So while elements may be scary  for very young people, you won't find the axe-wielding/bloody faced horror outfit at our location.  That's not what we promote.  And there are hundreds of other ways to be funny, scary, and have a good time!

September 10, 2008

We're excited to announce another expansion of our business!  Later this month, we'll announce details!

September 1, 2008

A special reminder as we all adjust schedules from summer to school time:  we hope the times chosen work well with you each week.  If for some reason they don't, just give us enough time to work with you on finding a new time that will work.  We made sure to notify all of new school year times weeks in advance, but did have a couple of families for whom it didn't work.  Unfortunately, they didn't call until literally hours before their lesson.  So remember to be proactive and contact us farther in advance if you need to change times due to conflicts!  Thank you!

August 31, 2008

Happy Labor Day!  It wouldn't be Labor Day without Jerry Lewis, so remember to give a shout out to MDA for all they have done and will do to help children and families effected by muscular dystrophy. "Make those phones ring", and then lay on the couch for an extra half hour.  It's Labor Day - you deserve it!

August 15, 2008

We have new additions to the Let's Play family!  Kathy Winghart and Lena Luke both join the studio and we are very excited to welcome them.  Mrs. Winghart acts as lead instructor for violin, piano and voice while Mrs. Luke works with many of our acting students.  They both have two things we love at Let's Play: lots of experience and lots of enthusiasm!  Welcome aboard!

August 1, 2008

An entirely new bunch of camps come your way this month!  While it's too late to enroll, we thought we'd forwarn you of the craziness you may witness at the studio!

July 7, 2008

The camps are done for June, but there are more on the way in August.  You can still sign up for some of them, so check them out under LINKS.

July 3, 2008

While we have our studio closed over the holiday, we all get a chance to relax just a bit more.  Remember all of those who are currently serving our country this July 4th, who miss their families, and face things each day we don't want to think about most of the time.  Keep them in your thoughts as you take in the fireworks.

June 25, 2008

It is HOT outside.  Best way to stay cool?  Stay inside and practice your assignments!

June 8, 2008

Our wide array of summer camps begin tomorrow!  We're excited to welcome so many kids of all ages, and more excited to help them have fun and learn through the arts.  It will be a busy month to be sure!  Remember, the June camps are no longer taking applications, but you still have time to enroll for our August offerings.
On another note, the new season of Prarie Repertory Theater begins this week with "Bingo the Musical."  Heidi acts as Musical Director for the shows this season, and will be leading the bands as well.  Make sure to stop by and say 'hi' when you go to the show!  We love seeing our students support the arts whenever possible!

June 1, 2008

Tune in to KELO tonight and you'll get to see an 'Eye on Keloland' focusing on the musical GROUP!

Also, next Monday is the official start of Camp Season around here!  Actually, most June camps are at the Brookings High School.  It's too late now to sign up for any of those, but it's not too late to sign up for the camps we offer in August.  Check out the LINKS section to see what camps are open.

May 25, 2008

Wow! A month has passed since the last post?  UNACCEPTABLE!  But there have been so many things going on that there was very little spare time...and the BLOG got put on the back burner!
So let's update, shall we?

  1) GROUP at the Pavilion went wonderfully.  The cast was excited to be back together before heading their own directions over the summer.  And the creators look forward to future successes with the production!  Stay tuned...
    2) Our Young Musician's Contest was held last week, and we'd like to congratulate all of the participants from our studio and elsewhere!  There was a lot of remarkable talent, and the judges did a great job of offering further insights.  Nice work!
    3) Our Summer Camps begin in several days, so if you haven't already done so, check out our offerings in the LINKS section.  A few classes have reached their maximum capacity, but many are designed to welcome as many as are interested so you can still join in the fun if you like.
    4) Welcome Summer!  And remember, we utilize our 7-Day Make-Up policy in addition to our normal 24-Hour Make-Up policy from now until Labor Day.  Give us seven days advanced notice of absence (ideal for missing due to vacations, camps, etc.) and we'll offer you times to fit in the lesson before and/or after the date you'll miss.  As always, notify us in writing (note, fax, email) or phone message.  Just telling your teacher during a lesson doesn't count as it must go through the office!
    5) Remember, no classes on Memorial Day (this Monday)!

That's it for now.  Keep checking back for updates!

April 21, 2008

Tickets are now on sale for GROUP at the Washington Pavilion!  If you are a student (or a family member of a student) at Let's Play, we must recommend attending the show if you can get to Sioux Falls and missed the run in Brookings.  It's a unique way to see in action the talents of the instructors around you.  From Heidi's music to Kate's performance to Micah's playing in the band...experience some of what we are trying to teach and enjoy yourselves while doing it!  We'd like to see as many PLAYers attend as possible.  Keep in mind it is for mature audiences, and the Pavilion suggests age 13+.

During the SDSU run, it sold out every night and people who heard about it were sent away each night!  There were even many people of all ages who came back multiple times, as it's a show that does connect with many people in some way or another.  We hope you get a chance to let it connect with you during it's May 8-11 run in Sioux Falls!

April 19, 2008

We have had such a blast working with our Musical Theater Workshop classes!  It's fun for us to actually be the ones to expose these kids to new stories, music, ideas, and bits of theater history.  We know firsthand that it is these kind of experiences that grow supporters of the arts!
We will be taking some time away from the class now, as our summer programs and camps cover some similiar information and will take up much time as well.  But look for the next class down the road...and in the meantime, tell us if you have a suggestion for what musical we should spend the month focusing on for the month!

April 15, 2008

It's official:  GROUP is heading to Sioux Falls!  The musical with music by our own Heidi Grimsley (and book/lyrics by Aaron Toronto) was a big hit when SDSU performed it a few weeks ago.  In fact, it was the best selling studio production in the history of SDSU theater!

Now, the Washington Pavillion in Sioux Falls will host the next leg of this locally grown musical about group therapy and the anxiety-riddled clients who attend.  We are excited to have them work with the show!

The show performs May 8, 9, 10 at 8pm, and May 10, 11 at 2:30pm  The cost is $14 (+tax), and it is recommended for mature audiences (sort of a PG-13 rating).  Tickets are available as of this Friday, by calling the Washington Pavillion Box Office (1-877-WASH-PAV) or can be purchased thru their website (www.washingtonpavillion.org).

In the meantime, know that shirts/cd orders from the original run should be going out shortly.  The Official Soundtrack for GROUP is undergoing completion as we ... blog.  Keep in touch with GROUP goings-on (or order a t-shirt or soundtrack) at www.groupthemusical.com.

    Very exciting!

April 14, 2008

Taxes are due tomorrow.  In "celebration" we are waiving any new drawing or piano student's registration fee!  This offer is only for those who enroll tomorrow by midnight (12am-12am)!  Of course, you must mention this offer when calling  (it's an extra reward for those who read the BLOG).  And you better get your taxes done!

April 11, 2008

NO CLASSES TODAY DUE TO WEATHER CONDITIONS.  We did hope to offer instruction today, but realize that the roads and weather may still be poor as the weather warnings continue throughout the day.  That's the magic of South Dakota!  Go build a snowman, make a snow angel, have a snowball fight, build a fort, shovel the driveway, and savor it all as much as you can.  Surely, this will be the end of snow until November!

April 10, 2008

NO CLASSES TODAY DUE TO BLIZZARD WARNING.   While this warning may continue tomorrow, please check back if you are a normal Friday student as we may still opt to have classes if the weather permits.  Check our phone message and website for latest information.

April 8, 2008

Remember our Winter Weather Policy (more snow may still come our way!)  If school cancels due to weather or if there is a blizzard or winter storm warning....classes are apt be cancelled.  Always check the BLOG and our outgoing phone message if in doubt, as we may not contact all people if the situation arises.

April 5, 2008

We're getting ready to announce some exciting GROUP news....stay tuned the next few days!

April 2, 2008
Snow/melt/snow/melt/snow/melt....such an easy pattern and yet so annoying at times.  In honor of the last great snowfall of Winter, it's time for a new "Internet Only Deal!"  Any person who enrolls for drawing lessons will get 10% off their first invoice.  In order to draw the great scenery of the SD Plains (or anything else for that matter), you need to get the skillz, right?  Soon you can go out, drawing pad in hand, as the weather goes from cold to brisk and Mother Nature turns in her shovel for a hoe.  Prepare now with basics to advanced drawing instruction.  This is for any student who enrolls by Saturday, April 5th!   As always, you MUST MENTION THIS POSTING AT THE TIME of enrolling to get the deal.

April 1, 2008

Today is the due date for the May/June invoice, and we are also starting a new "Common Questions" series here on the BLOG to share some....well, common....questions.  With summer approaching, what better time than for our first question:
"My summer is busy.  Should I stop taking lessons?  Or can I split lesson time and just alternate with someone or something?"
We are often asked about how to handle lessons over the summer.  To take or not to take, that is the question.  Know that we strongly recommend continuing your lessons for a few reasons.  In fact, we feel strongly enough that we've even created policies around it!
Why?  Our reasons to continue are based on our experiences with the now thousands of students we've taught over the years.  And of course, what we do for one we do all (to be fair).  First, from the practical business standpoint, we cannot hold the time for you.  We cannot even do that for students who occassionally inquire about attending every-other-week (one reason we do not offer such schedule options).   That probably isn't a concern for most (except if you really like your timeframe, teacher, etc...as we cannot guarantee getting back on the same day/with same person/whatever once you leave the schedule.  If that does matter, do best to continue as there's less chance of a schedule shake-up to face.)
Primarily, however, the reason is student-based.  Students regress hugely over the summer.  Think of how the first weeks of school in the fall are refreshing material they had been working on every day for an hour or so.  Realize we see them for a few minutes each week.  The lapse and recovery time it takes when they begin effects their progress, their desire to learn, and can cause much frustration on their part. (SIDEBAR:  The semi-related reason we don't offer every-other-week lessons is that students do not progress rapidly enough to maintain interest.  Instead of realizing that it's because they don't attend weekly, it becomes the thought-progress of  "I'm just not that good," or "this isn't as intersting as I thought it would be," or even the "my teacher must not be that good because I've barely progressed.").
We've even created policies to make it easier to keep your foot in the door instruction-wise, but have a good summer with camps, out of town visits, etc.  Our 7-Day policy is in effect from Memorial Day thru Labor Day.  We'll post the official version soon, but basically it states that if we know of absence with a 7-Day notice, we can reschedule it whenever.  Some students who are missing for multiple weeks in the summer are already making up the lessons in advance.  That way they hold their schedule spot, have less regression, and still keep their interest going, etc.  Some want to wait and make up lessons later, which is fine, too.  It's based on what scheduling allows, and we get them all wrapped up by mid-September.  That's been our policy for several years, and we've yet to find a better one!  We've even had people who essentially were out of the country or gone for the entire three months, but were able to attend a couple of lessons and make up the rest.  While there was still some regression, it was considerably less because the student still had assignments and goals and another lesson date coming. Also, the family didn't have to reregister (including applicable fees), find a new time on the schedule, risk not having a time when fall arrived, etc.
Finally, know that you would be the most unusual student EVER if you didn't miss at all over the summer.  Most families miss anywhere 3 - 6 times during those busy months.  From vacations, to camps, to sports...no question there's a lot going on.  That's why we do our best to not only maintain our instruction philosophy and do what we feel is best for students, but also offer flexibility in form of 7-Day Policy to help them out.
Whew....this was a long BLOG!  But it's essentially what we've told each person who has asked us about summer lessons over the years.  We'll post more of our "common questions" series on upcoming BLOGS, so stay tuned!  Many will be this long.... and some will be quite short.... but all will be informative!  And as always, this is just a BLOG posting.  So feel free to ask directly if you have more questions or comments.  Chances are we forgot some things, or improperly stated others....you never know in a BLOG, do you?

March 31, 2008

The last day of March already?!?!?!

NO LESSONS TODAY!  Per our Winter Weather Policy, we are closed due to weather conditions for the duration of today's private and group lessons (including any classes offered Mondays).  Enjoy your snow day!

Remember that both invoices and the Young Musician's Contest registrations are due tomorrow!  Also remember that if you are joining in our next Musical Theater Workshop (featuring "The Lion King") it begins tomorrow and you should enroll asap!  You can still leave voice messages today.

March 30, 2008

Our April Fool's Internet special (and it's not a joke):  any person who enrolls in a new offering (meaning a new student signs up, or an existing student signs up for instruction in something other than what they have been doing) will get an official Let's Play t-shirt!  They must sign up for lessons between today and April 1st (while lessons may start later, they must get on the schedule during this time only).  Again, you must mention this deal when enrolling!

March 27, 2008

Sorry...school is in session!  Why is it that everytime we are told to prepare for a huge amount of snow, if fizzles out?  Not that I'm complaining.  But still.... Have the weatherman ever heard the story of the boy who cried wolf?

March 26, 2008

What?  There aren't anymore holidays left on the calendar for some time, kids.  So I'm sure you are all praying for a snowday tomorrow as another gust of Winter hits town.  Good luck!  And remember, that our Winter Weather policy states that we are closed if the Brookings School District is closed due to the weather, or when we are in an active Winter Storm Warning.  We'll put the info on our outgoing phone message as well as on our website (here or on 'news ticker' in front).

March 24, 2008

Yes, we're "closed" and yes, we're still doing work!  We had a great Easter, and hope you had the same.  Remember that the next invoice payment is due by April 1st to avoid late fees.  While we have a growing number of students who take advantage of our '"Auto-withdrawal" options, there are still several who could benefit from setting it up.  You can do it over the phone or in person with your Visa or MasterCard credit card.  You can even do 'split-pay' with this method and have 50% of the invoice be deducted each month.  Best of all -- no possibility of late fees.  Just call or stop by to visit with Heidi or Randy if you'd like to set up your account.

March 20, 2008

By the way, yes I realize I have an Internet Only special going on over the days we are closed for Easter (scroll down a couple entries).  Often times, even though we are not open for general business or instructing lessons, we are still around doing work.  If it's an urgent thing, or something such as our current special, we will return calls if possible.  However, I do realize that the special is set to end on Sunday... oops.  It is actually MONDAY at 5pm that it ends.  That way we can make sure we do contact people at least on Monday.

Anyway....HAPPY EASTER!

March 19, 2008

Remember, as is posted on our CALENDAR section (and on your invoices and at the studio), we are closed this Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday in observance of Easter.  So hardboil some eggs, grab your bunny ears, and go crazy!

March 18, 2008

Internet Only Deal:  Students who enroll for guitar instruction from March 20 - March 23 get 2 free lessons on their first invoice.  Of course, it's only for those who mention this "internet-only" special offer! If you are mulling it over (or if you know somebody who is)...there's no time better to join up!

March 16, 2008

Important information for any piano or voice students in SD who wish to attend the South Dakota Young Musician's Contest 2008 can now be found in LINKS section.  Should you have additional questions, just contact us.

Also, the list of Let's Play Summer Camps 2008 can also now be found under LINKS.  We'll announce when we'll accept registrations, and pricing will be updated for several offerings in upcoming days.   There's quite a list of offerings, and we're excited to welcome you all!

March 13, 2008

Busy, busy, busy.  Soon (hopefully over the weekend) you will find information on both our upcoming Summer Camps and our 2nd Annual Young Musician's Contest coming this spring!  Check the LINKS section for the information in upcoming days.

March 11, 2008

GROUP was a huge success!  It is officially the best-selling production EVER in the studio setting in the history of SDSU!  Wow!  Kudos to all and we look forward to hearing more with the future of this production later on!

March 7, 2008

Don't worry....we're almost done with the inaugural Brookings run of GROUP at SDSU.  All shows have sold out now, so if you were thinking about going you can get on the waiting list and cross your fingers.  It's one of those shows that both performers and creators wish could continue, especially as it keeps getting more and more new viewers.  Alas, theater is one of those things that doesn't allow it.  You can, however, still order your GROUP t-shirts and the soundtrack album, coming out in the next few days.  Visit their website (via our LINKS page) and order there, or stop by one of the performances and order there.  Remember, to check out our previous GROUP week special regarding ticket stubs (scroll down).  And CONGRATULATIONS to everyone involved with GROUP!

March 6, 2008

Seen any good musicals lately?  Well, then you better check out GROUP, before it ends the run this Saturday.  Call ahead to get tix, as seating is reserved and while there may be tickets available at the door, it's been playing to full houses.  Of course, if you don't see it, then you'll just miss the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to view a new musical involving many of the instructors at the very studio you attend (or would like to attend).  But...no pressure!

March 4, 2008S

We are working on releasing our summer camp schedule, for those who plan ahead and want to book spaces.  Generally our camps have limited space avails, so keep your eyes peeled.  This year, we are really getting into more specialty areas with some of our offerings that will include things from Guitar "Jam" Camp to Impovisation Camp to other areas.  We hope to have something final in the coming days. Stay tuned....

March 3, 2008

The show GROUP has gotten so many wonderful comments from each audience, and has been playing to full houses for each performance!  We're beyond glad that it has received so much buzz and look forward to big crowds for the remaining performances this Wed - Sat.   There are not only the "regular" theater supporters coming, but a multitude of people who heard from others how good it is or are simply curious.   It's also surprising to see so many people coming more than once because they enjoy it so much!  So to our own Heidi, Micah and Kate --- "Break a leg" for week two of GROUP!

February 29, 2008

Happy Leap Day!  This is the final entry for GROUP week, and thanks to all those who are supporting the show.  Also, check back to the offical GROUP website in coming weeks, as you will be able to order the original cast recording online.  This is especially great if you are one of the out of town readers of the blog and want to support the show.  You can get there via our LINKS section -- we'll leave the link up for a while as the show continues to gather interest.

Also, a final GROUP week special for those who didn't get to the show yet and will attend tonight or the weekend matinee (or even next week):   save your ticket stub.  New students who bring it in will have their registration fees waived.  Existing students who bring it in will have $10 credit applied toward their next invoice.  Limit one ticket per student.  Remember, the show is for mature audiences....so it's ok if the tickets from the parent are applied toward their child.  And you must "claim" the deal by Monday, March 10 at 5pm.

Finally, for those who attend GROUP tonight or next Friday, the creators and cast will have a special meet-n-greet after the performance.  It's a question and answer time in which the audience can ask questions and hear about the creation of the show.  So plan on staying a few minutes after the program if you can!

.... Now, get back to your Leap Day festivities.

February 28, 2008

The official opening of GROUP was wonderful!  We truly hope as many people as possible can see this show.  The audience last night loved it, and it was so exciting to see something brand new come to life before people's eyes.  The cast is outstanding, the music and script are one-of-a-kind, the direction was creative....it's a wonderful final product and it's a unique experience that people in Brookings can see the show created from the ground up by people from Brookings!

One word of caution: it played to a sold out crowd last night.  You should call to get tickets NOW, as it will most likely sell out for future performances.  SDSU BOX OFFICE: 688-6045.

Oh yeah, and in honor of GROUP week:  Have a "group" of 2 or 3 guitar students sign up for a group lesson by 3/1 at 5pm and they receive 25% off their first invoice!  No age restrictions, but based on teacher approval.

February 27, 2008

Tonight is the World Premiere of "GROUP"!  Break a leg Heidi (co-author, music director, band leader), Micah (band guitarist) and Kate (performer)!

In honor of the event: the first person who emails or calls in a 'review' this evening (which means you must first attend the show this evening!) receives a $50 gift certificate to Let's Play for any of our services!  It doesn't have to be fancy... just a few sentences on your likes/dislikes. Again, this is just for tonight's opening performance.  We'll contact you if you were indeed the first person to do so.  And keep in mind our other specials by scrolling down to previous dates, as many will overlap during this exciting time!

February 26, 2008

GROUP opens tomorrow night, and they are having a swanky opening night party afterwards!  Don't worry, you can get tickets for one of the other shows this week or next week.  At any rate...GROUP week continues with our next GROUP special.  Anyone who brings in their ticket stub from either a Wed or Thur performance of the show, gets $16 discounted from their next invoice.   But you must bring the stub from one of those shows by Friday at 5pm!  Why $16?  That's the cost of an adult ticket, and this show is for adults.

February 25, 2008

It's GROUP week at Let's Play!  While the show is for mature audiences only, we're doing specials all week long for the younger students.  Beginning today:

Our acting class  (level one) begins on Saturday, 11am-12pm.  It runs each Saturday in March/April.  The cost is $50 per student.  However, if you enroll by Wednesday at 12pm (noon - extended deadline), you can add to the fun by adding friends or family.  The first student is $50, the second student you add (friend or family member) is $30.  The third isonly $10. (limit three per group).  You must mention this special when enrolling!  Check back tomorrow....for another GROUP special!  And adults...get your tickets to see GROUP by calling the SDSU box office at 688-6045!

February 21, 2008

You probably noticed that there is almost always at least one "Internet Only Deal" being offered.  Why?  Because we want you to stay up-to-date with studio happenings and info by checking this website often (yes, even daily), even if it means we give away our money to make it happen!  In fact, some of you smart ones who have caught on to our deals know how much it's been saving you!  Plus, as we always say...we are called "Let's PLAY" not "Let's not have fun".

So in the spirit of giving away something for no reason but fun...the next two current students who call or email the studio will receive one free lesson credited onto their next invoice.  And the next NEW student will receive 1 free lessson on their next invoice.  Again, this deal isn't for just anybody....you have to mention this posting or you won't get the deal (kind of the point, right?).  Now have a good day!

February 20, 2008

Students age 10-16 are welcome to join the Acting Class (Level One) offering, Saturdays 11am-12pm in March and April.  Participants work on the "basics" of acting, theater, improvisation, and more during this multiple week offering.  From improving stage presence, to learning to think on their feet, to developing characters... this class is a fun way to work on various elements of acting.  While it may be an introduction to those just thinking about pursuing theater, it is a necessity for those who already know they want to hone their skills!  It's also required for those who wish to later take Acting Class Levels Two and Three, which focuses on specific scene work and monologues, respectively.  Enroll by Feb. 25th!  Limited Spaces available.

February 19, 2008 - PART 2

"GROUP" Tickets are on sale as of today!  Why should you go?  Well, you may already attend some of theater performances, but if not....here's a few reasons why:

    1) This is the world premiere of a new musical (which, incidentally, doesn't happen in Brookings very often).
    2) The music was written by Heidi Grimsley (owner of Let's Play) and Aaron Toronto (another Brookings resident).  Wouldn't it be nice to support the home team?
    3) The guitar player in the band for the show?  Our own Micah Wetzel!
    4) You may recognize a couple of the cast members from the singing telegram or children's party we did for you.  You may also recognize our newest instructor, Kate Wismer among the performers!
    5)  While the show has been workshopped outside of Brookings, you are invited to see the very first complete performance of the show! (see #1)

That's at least 5 reasons, now you can make up more on your own.

However, note that due to the subject matter the show is recommended for mature audiences only. Therefore, this show is more for the parents of some of our younger students.

Now call the SDSU Box Office at (605) 688-6045 now, as the shows have limited seating!

There will be more "Group" plugs over upcoming days, which can be reason #6: You want to know what everyone else is talking about!
I'm sure there will be several more "Group" plugs over the next couple of weeks.

February 19, 2008
As a studio setting we are pretty flexible as far as students who need to move to other days or times.  In fact, the majority of students will need to make a move at some point to another day because of conficts with other weekly activities, jobs or duties.  Some families move every couple of months!  On our end, we do our best to not have to reschedule students, unless out of necessity....and some of you know we are in that situation now!  This week we welcome new teacher Kate Wismer, and adjust the schedule of Jaret as he begins working later in the day than he had been.  Additionally, the next three weeks or so see sporadic changes as many members of Let's Play are involved in "Group" the musical which opens in late February at SDSU.  We appreciate your acceptance of schedule changes!  And we remind you to contact us if you need to move to another day/time on a permanent basis as well!  If we can't help you immediately, we can put you on the waiting list for the time of your choice!

February 18, 2008
New Internet Only Special:  Any student Grade K-10 can enroll in our Musical Theater Workshop for March, which is focusing on favorite "The Sound of Music."  As with all Workshops, participants learn about, discuss, and have fun with the elements of the selected show.  The class currently meets Tuesdays 4-4:30pm.  The cost is typically $35 per student.  However, the current Internet Special allows any person who calls/emails to enroll by Wednesday, February 20th to pay for one and get another class spot free! Offer it to a sibling, a friend...whomever!  But you must enroll by this Wednesday at 5pm, and you absolutely must mention this special when enrolling!

Two for one deals......mmmmmmmm.......delicious!

February 15, 2008
Todays Random Rant:  Remember when it was just hard candy hearts with a "Love You" on them? Now it's gummies, suckers, mini candybars, sour candies...the same stuff from Halloween, but made red, pink, white, and in the shape of hearts to cross-over to Valentine's Day.  Smart marketing from candy companies; probably not much to improve the health of kids or move society forward though....  I guess the new candy can replace the Christmas treats that have now found themselves in the back of the cupboard, if you have any left.  The Christmas candy really just replaced the Halloween stuff, which replaced back-to-school treats, which came along after all the summer treats were eaten.  The summer stuff was just the thing to replace the Easter treats, which took the place of last year's Valentine's candy that had gotten too hard to eat.  Life can be measured in days on the calendar, or in how many times you buy the same candy (though nicely repackaged in different shapes and colors) to replace the stuff you just got rid of.  Have a nice, sweet weekend!

February 14, 2008
Life is made up of two kinds of people: those who feel like the Little Red-Haired-Girl (adored by many) and those who feel like Charlie Brown (adored by noone).  So if you don't get a valentine today, don't worry....   We all have Charlie Brown days.

February 13, 2008
Our newest addition, Kate Wismer, now has some bio info posted in the ABOUT US section as well as at the studio.  She's been observing a lot this week, so you may have already met her.   Also, remember tomorrow is Valentine's Day!  We are taking Singing Telegram orders only thru noon tomorrow! (Well, for ones to be delivered that day....we offer them year-round, so if you didn't get to it for a Valentine, book it for their birthday, anniversary, etc.)

February 10, 2008
Valentine's Day is Thursday!  If you want to do something different and memorable, send a Let's Play Singing Telegram.  The recipient gets a special valentine card, songs of love (which can be tailored to the person...are they a spouse or just a friend, etc) and you can even add balloons and flowers.  Book by Tuesday and take $7 off the total.  Sorry, but anyone who orders Wed will pay full price.  And those who order Thursday will pay an additional surcharge.  They'll turn red from embarrassment...but red is the color for the holiday, right?

February 8, 2008
Studio news:  Kate Wismer will be joining our staff of instructors, acting as voice and piano teacher for several students beginning in the coming weeks.  You may recognize Kate from her roles at SDSU (recently Anna in the "King and I" and coming soon as Alex in "Group"), or you may have caught her last week on the Miss America pageant (as the current Miss South Dakota).  Or you may find yourself meeting her for the first time in the coming weeks....be sure to introduce yourself!  And welcome, Kate!

February 7, 2008
GROUP, the musical Heidi has been working on for over two years with Aaron Toronto, is well underway on the SDSU campus.  It opens February 27th along with a big party celebrating the "world premiere" of the show.  Now, you can take a peak at some more info about this show by visiting the site (available under LINKS), or by clicking here.  It's the musical that 'gets in your head...'.

February 4, 2008
New Internet Only Special: menion this posting when enrolling in our new Voice Class by Friday at 5pm and save $20 off of your first invoice.  The class is led by Heidi and is geared at either existing voice students who want to do this in place of or in addition to their vocal lessons for a while, or for students newer to studying voice.  Limited slots, so call soon (and by Friday to get this deal).  The class is Tuesdays or Fridays 5-5:30pm for ages 7-12.  Remember to mention this post to get the deal!

February 3, 2008
GROUP - the musical we've mentioned a few times before for obvious reasons - starts official rehearsals today.  While many people are watching the Super Bowl, these folks will be starting a very busy three weeks to get the show together.  From the few times I've heard some of their songs, it's gonna be great! More info to come....

February 2, 2008
Happy Groundhog Day!  Yep, he saw his shadow...six more weeks of winter.

January 31, 2008
Another month gone...how are your New Year's Resolutions going at this point?  Still with it or gave up? We hope you're hanging in there with whatever goals you wanted to achieve!  It's never too late to start with renewed vigor.... you don't have to wait until next Dec. 31st to improve yourself.

January 29, 2008
New Internet Only Offer:  $10 off any booking of a Let's Play Singing Telegram to be delivered on Valentine's Day!  As with all offers, you must mention this special at the time of booking in order to receive it.  And while the telegram will be delivered on the big day, it must be booked by Monday, February 4th at 5pm to be eligible for this discount.  Call for more details on what exactly we do for this service.... you know it's fun to embarrass the ones you love!  And their memory will last a lot longer than some flowers.  Hurry...we are limiting this discount to only the first 15 telegrams ordered.  Which reminds me, there is no limit to how many you can order and still receive this deal on each one.  Send one to your true love, as well as your mom, your friend, and your co-worker.  But only the first 15 orders can receive the discount (and again, you must mention this when ordering to get it).

January 28, 2008
Good News: "High School Musical" at BHS played to sold out crowds.  Congratulations!
Bad News: Kate Wismer (Miss South Dakota) didn't place in Miss America Pageant over the weekend. Good News:  Kate is now free to appear in GROUP at SDSU -- which opens in just a few weeks!
Bad News
:  We're supposed to return to cold temps with some freezing rain and snow tonight.
Good News:  The weather provides great excuse for not yet getting the outdoor Christmas lights down!

January 25, 2008
Looking for something your family will like doing this weekend?  Attend the BHS production of Disney's smash "High School Musical."  We haven't seen the play, but know it's one of the rare things we can all go to together and enjoy in some way.  If you don't know about the show, then you probably live under a rock (or don't have kids around you in the 7-14 demographic).  Anyway, it runs Sunday at 2pm and Monday at 7:30pm in the V.A. Bell Auditorium at BHS.  You can probably get the whole family in for the cost of a couple Value Meals or a trip to a local coffee house.

January 24, 2008
Heidi is out ill today.  She thought it was possibly strep, but it turns out it's "just" a really bad viral thing. And this reminds me to remind you that we do our best to keep from spreading any colds or sicknesses year-round.  We repeatedly clean off anything that students touch (keyboards, instruments, etc) with antibacterial cleaners.  We clean common areas frequently.  And we remind students to wash their hands before a lesson!  Please do so!  Oh yeah....one more thing: just like the hospitals and clinics recommend - cough/sneeze into your arm....NOT into your hands!  That's today's friendly Health Tip.

And now for the next Internet Only Special:  The next two people who call and enroll in any of our class offerings (Music & Me, Musical Theater Workshops, Piano Class, Voice Class, Acting Class) get 50% off their invoice for the class.   Offer expires Saturday at noon.

January 22, 2008
The first person who calls and mentions this posting (new OR existing student) receives a Let's Play t-shirt and 1 FREE :30min lesson.  It can be deducted from next invoice for existing student, or just used randomly by a new student.  But it's only for the first person who phones us and says "I saw your posting".

Yes, some of our Internet Only Deals are a bit crazy or unpredictable.  But we are called "Let's PLAY" so why not?  From our side, it's also a fun way to make sure you keep up-to-date on us as well!

January 21, 2008
"Peter Pan" is announced as our next Musical Theater Workshop.  And we've found the current crop of students not only have a good time, but are definately expanding their horizons to that of a much older student of the arts.  Therefore, we've decided to expand our Workshop to include any interested student age K-Grade 10!  Join in the fun!

January 20, 2008
There are new Class Offerings you can check out under our LINKS page.  These are often great deals for the budget conscious, but often times they provide unique and fun opportunities to work with peers.  In particular, check out Heidi's new Voice Class, in which she'll lead the same quality of individual instruction, but allowing each student to learn with and from others!  Also, there's a new Acting Class coming for 10-16 year olds, so get ready to find your spotlight!

January 16, 2008
We're smack-dab in the middle of winter....the part where the excitement of snow for the holidays has passed and the misery of the cold winds have already chapped various body parts.  But this, too, shall pass.  Soon enough we'll be complaining about the heat and humidity.  Enjoy what you can of it and ignore the rest.  Try staying inside and practicing your piano, guitar, acting, vocal (etc) pieces for us!   Then you'll stay warm, unchapped, and ready to showoff your talents when the weather gets warmer. This has been a mental health alert from your friends at the Let's Play BLOG page.

January 15, 2008
Good luck to Kate Wismer, the current Miss South Dakota, as she heads to Vegas for the Miss America contest.  Kate has done some work with us in our entertainment arena (Singing Telegrams, Children's Parties, etc) and we hope to work with her more down the line.

She can be seen on the TLC tv-show that is currently airing, as they trail the contestants on their road to victory.  Go to http://tlc.discovery.com/tv/miss-america/miss-america.html for more info.  Visit the site and vote for Kate...you may help her win!

She's also currently rehearsing GROUP, the musical Heidi's been working on for quite a while, and will appear in the SDSU production in several weeks!

GOOD LUCK, KATE!

January 14, 2008
New "Internet Only" Deal:  Any new piano student who pays for at least 4 lessons gets 2 free - regardless of lesson length!  It can be someone totally new to our studio, or a current student in another area who wants to try piano.  Now's the time!  Remember, you must mention this special when enrolling (when you get a spot on the schedule) or you don't receive it!  We told you these web deals are good! But hurry....this deal is only good until Monday,  January 21 at 5pm!

January 11, 2008
We've changed our make-up policy (see LINKS) to make it even more convenient for families, who now have until 10am the day OF the lesson to notify us of an absence.  We're giving it a try for a few weeks before we officially convert to it, to make sure it works well for all involved.  As always, just ask should you have any questions!

January 9, 2008
We've had several inquiries from various students about starting a new theater class.  We've done several of these before, but had put it on the backburner for a while as the studio continued to expand. We use the time to work with the students on the basics to the more advanced (which means how to stand and speak properly to developing characters to acting out with monologues and scenes and everything in between).  These are always a ton of fun for the younger students.  And it's awesome experience for the older ones who get a chance to actually learn by doing.  They are generally continued from month to month, and we are trying to find a place on our busy schedule to begin a new section.

Please email or call the studio if you would like to be notified when we begin another class.  We may divide the class by age, depending on the number and age of those who respond.

January 8, 2008
Another "Internet Only" Deal is on the table:  Any student who enrolls to study guitar (which means this is only for those who don't currently study guitar with us) gets $25 off their first invoice.  They must complete the enrollment process by Monday, January 14th at 5pm.  As always, other stipulations may apply especially this one: "You MUST mention this deal at the time of enrollment prior to next Monday to receive it!"

January 7, 2008
Finally getting back into the swing of things...  Our Winter Camp held Jan. 3, 4, and 5 was a great time! The campers not only seemed to have a lot of fun and meet new friends, but we know they had some beginning skills and excercises to help them become better speakers, performers, and well-rounded people.

After having done so many camps and worked with literally thousands of kids over the years, it is funny how similiar they all are, regardless of age, race, income, location, family life, etc.  About 20% are the "pros" who have been involved in the arts for a long time already.  If they keep their minds open to continued learning (and avoid the "I know it all" complex that can creep in there), they'll be the people who can speak in front of any group (even as they enter the workforce), maybe do a play or two in school, and maybe pursue the arts head-on later in life.   About 50% are the "even-Stevens" of the arts:  they do well with it and get more than they realize from it.  But they have a lot of built in potential lying there inside them that can maybe be accessed in other ways later on.  Hopefully, early arts exposure makes them support the arts later in life...and realize how difficult it can be.  And 30% are the students whom we secretly hope and wish would continue in the arts right now.  During the short time we are with them we see things that they may not show elsewhere (or not that often, anyway).  They haven't yet found the light inside themselves that makes them who they are, but really need to do so and the sooner the better.  They don't necessarily come from a family that follows the arts, so when they are exposed to parts of the arts it opens up entire new worlds to them.  We've seen members of that 30% group open up, gain confidence, be proud of their abilities, be brave enough to try new things, show off, and hold their head high after working in the arts for a while.  We strive to make that difference whether it's in weekly lessons or Winter Camp.  Thanks for sharing your talents with us!

January 3, 2008
The new year coincides with special offers we will make available via this website only.  We began during the holidays, and made several people quite happy with how much money they saved.  We will not be promoting them anywhere else but here.  Some will be limited to first come/first serve, others by time or other means.

Since we begin our Beginner Drawing Class for ages 7-14 and for age 15-adult this coming weekend, it is the focus of our first special.  Have one child enroll for the class, and one more is FREE!  Bring in their sibling, have them call a friend, or maybe it's YOU who want to join the class.  It is only good for those who enroll now thru Friday, Jan. 5 at 5pm.  (see class info in LINKS section or call with any questions)

January 2, 2008
Happy New Year!  And now back to work (sigh).  It  was a nice break, and much of what we wanted to get done sat in the back of our minds as we decided to instead enjoy our family and the season.  But now we hit the ground running again....

The following info is for those K-High School campers who will be at our Winter Camp beginning tomorrow.  It's at the Brookings Library (upstairs) from 1-5 Thur, Fri, and Sat.  At the end on Sat. we'll let whomever wants to watch some of the excercises and things you did during the camp (not a performance....kind of like visiting a classroom).

Rules: We are not responsible for the campers outside of our camp time, so make sure you have arranged who is picking up/dropping off, etc.  Please bring a water bottle with your name on it.  Also, where comfortable shoes and clothes (tennis shoes/sneakers, jeans are fine).

Now visit LINKS section and practice music as much as possible before camp starts tomorrow!  (It's there as mp3's, along with lyrics to songs you can print out in .pdf format).

See you tomorrow!

YEAHHHHHH!  WINTER VACATION!:   There is excitement in the air as the young and old alike prepare for Christmas. Will you be traveling?  Hosting?  Last-minute shopping?  Going to bed early so Santa can get to work?  Whatever your plans, we hope that you have a wonderful time!  Remember to stop, breath it all in, and enjoy it.  After all, there are a limited number of Christmas-times we are privileged to experience!

Remember, the studio is closed for instruction from Dec. 22 - Jan. 2.  Lessons resume Thursday, January 3, 2008.   We will, however, be returning calls and emails, planning our next year, preparing for the BCT Camp January 3-5, and various other duties.  So drop us a line if you have questions, want to enroll for any of our offerings (the Beginner Drawing Class begins in January, so do that soon), need a singing telegram, etc.  We're around!  We'll make sure we continue to update this BLOG a couple of times as well.  And if you haven't visited the Santa website we have under LINKS, we suggest doing it soon!  Especially the Norad Santa Tracker part of that website......very fun!

MERRY CHRISMAS AND HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Holiday Special #6: The last of our large crop of holiday savings for our internet viewers!  It's a nice one to go out with, as well.  First, any current student who enrolls for any offering in which they are not currently enrolled get's 3 free lessons applied into that area to help you out as you expand your horizons and try something new.  Pretty nice, huh?  Second, any new student who is not enrolled in any of our offerings receives 1 free lesson for each month they pre-pay for.  If you pay the initial invoice for January/February, that means 2 of those lessons are "no charge."  If you would like to pay for March, throw in another freebie. Due to the value, this is limited to only 6 months of pre-pay (which would be 6 free weeks of instruction!).  This special ends Friday, December 21st at 5pm!  As always, you don't get the deal unless you mention this AT THE TIME of initial registration!

Tis' the season!

And remember, check out our other Holiday Specials (just scroll down)!

December 18, 2007

Holiday Special #5: As you see under our Entertainment Offerings, we have several options available to bring some extra life to your special event or occassion.  Some things may not be listed, but we do them as well ("characters" at a party, wedding music arrangements, background musicians, etc). Today's special spotlights that area by giving 25% off any Entertainment offering that is booked by Dec. 21st!  Yes, it can be used in the coming months, but now is the time to buy if you want to get the discount!  So order the Singing Telegram now for the birthday in February, or book the Children's Party that won't happen until May!  Some limitations apply, and as always, it's only for those who mention this BLOG posting!  And you have until 5pm 12/21/07 to purchase!  Now that's Entertainment!  Check back tomorrow for the last Holiday Special of the Year!

December 17, 2007

Ta-Da!.....It's time for Holiday Special #4:  This particular special is based on all of the interest in our holiday and summer performance camps.  Also, for the adults, it's the best way to learn to improve your public speaking skills.  Over the years we've worked with business people who want to get better in front of goups, to kids who like to act with their imagination.  It all falls under one catagory: theater. Enroll yourself or someone else for instruction in this field by Friday, Dec. 21st and receive a free Let's Play t-shirt and 20% off your first invoice period.  Remember, some of these deals can be in conjunction with others and some aren't....so ask.  Also, make sure you mention the deal when signing up, because these offers are only for those who specifically see it here and are not promoted eleswhere!  The last-two holiday specials come in the next couple of days, so check back!

December 14, 2007

Keep in mind the Gift Certificate hot deal (it's darn good) continues thru Dec. 21 (see Nov. 13 BLOG by scrolling down).  There's one more day for Holiday Special #2 (as described below).  And now, to make sure we fit in all 6 specials before Christmas....it's time for:

Holiday Special #3!  Enroll as a new Guitar Student by Monday, Dec. 17th at 5pm and recieve 30% off January/February instruction!  Regardless of your lesson length, we'll take off 30% (including off any registration fees).  This special is limited to one per family, only valid if you mention it when enrolling, and is over after 5pm Monday!  Yeah, we go a little crazy around the holidays....  and keep coming back as we have 3 more Holiday Specials we'll cover thru next week!

December 11, 2007

It's time for Holiday Special #2:  Any person who enrolls in our upcoming Beginner Drawing Class in either age group (7-14 or 15-adult) can do so at 50% off!!!  BUT, it is ONLY good for those who contact the studio and enroll today thru 7pm Dec. 15.  And you MUST mention this offer when enrolling to receive it!  There is no limit to how many you enroll (though there is a limit to the number accepted in the class).  The regular rate is $25 for the class that is held each week during January.  It includes all materials, taxes, etc.  During this special, the rate is only $12.50 per student (and yes, it can even earn you discounts toward regular instruction per our normal discount savings options)!    You don't need to be drawn a picture of how good this deal is (but you could by someone who has already taken the class)!

December 10, 2007

First, Santa was so pleased that so many boys and girls have come to visit him at the Santa House put together by Let's Play and Downtown Brookings this year!  While he had to get back to the North Pole to undergo final preparations for his big night, he wanted us to pass along his gratitude!  And he hopes to see all of you back at the house next year as well... so stay on his nice list!
Second, a quick heads up on something I didn't mention in our first Holiday Special posting.  We will be offering a total of 6 Holiday Specials from Dec. 6 thru Dec. 21.  So keep checking back to see if one works for you (or as a gift)!  Tomorrow comes Holiday Special #2....

December 6, 2007

We've talked about doing "internet only" promotions for quite some time, and today we're kicking it off with a nice one!

Holiday Special #1: ANY new student who joins by 5pm tomorrow, December 6th will receive 25% off their January/February invoice!  A "New Student" is one who is not taking any instruction at our studio, OR it's a current student who ADDS a NEW and different offering.  This offer is only good from 10am 12/6/07 to 5pm 12/7/07.  This promotion does not qualify toward our gift certificates (check out 11/13/07 Blog entry for that current deal).   And you MUST mention this "interent only" special at the time of enrolling to receive it!  Check back to the BLOG for new web-based deals often!

December 4, 2007

Wow!  What a response we received yesterday to our next camp (January 4, 5, and 6th)!  We accepted calls starting at 12:01am Dec. 3rd (and the first call received was actually at 12:05am).  We were already 25% booked by sunrise!  By 4:45pm we reached planned capacity for the camp.  While the waiting list has begun, don't get disheartened.  Get on the waiting list and we'll call you if there are people who have to drop out or are no shows the first day of camp.  And we can keep your information to give you advanced notice when we do another camp later on.  We look forward to a great time, kicking off the new year right!  Stay posted for details of the camp later on!  And for those who didn't make the camp, but want to still get involved try out our Musical Theater Workshop class that runs December and January featuring "The Wizard of Oz."  Call/email for details!

December 3, 2007

Today begins sign up for new camp Let's Play is running, on behalf of the BCT!  It is ABSOLUTELY FREE for the first 30 campers only - who must be between Kindergarten and Grade 12.  The camp is Jan. 4, 5, and 6 from 1-4pm.  Campers will work an a few "performance" things including music, movement, acting, improv, etc in this Children's Theater Workshop.  The goal of the camp is to give its members something fun to do when they get into their final leg of vacation and are becoming a bit restless.  The only way to register is by calling or emailing Randy at Let's Play!

December 1, 2007

Santa just called and told us he won't be able to be at the Santa House as scheduled today due to the Winter Storm Warning.  While he's used to the weather (and sounded like he was enjoying himself because of it), he can't risk getting his reindeer stuck here this time of year.  Instead he will be more excited to see youngsters next Saturday, December 8th from 12-2pm!  In the meantime, check out LINKS for a cool holiday website that will fill some of your Santa needs this weekend!

November 30, 2007

Santa just checked in regarding his schedule (we've been chosen to help with his agenda while in Brookings).  We told him that the children who visited with him after the Parade of Lights at the Santa House were very excited to have met him in person.  And we told him that there are some special requests for him during the week (call us to set one up if you are a daycare or small group with more than 6 visitors). He seems to be looking forward to visiting with more Brookings children Saturday from 10am-12pm at the Santa House on Main Ave.   And he wanted to let the boys and girls know that if they drop off their letter at the Santa House mailbox, he'll do his best to respond to it (so make sure to include a return address)!  Then he said "Ho Ho Ho" and "Merry Christmas" and "To all a Good Night."  Most of our conversations end that way.

November 29, 2007

November 28, 2007

Looking for something fun to do that puts you in the Christmas mood?  Visit the  Festival of Trees at the right time and you may not only see the beatiful and fun array of decorated trees.  You may also catch some free seasonal entertainment as various pianists from area instructors have students play there. Catch numerous young students from Let's Play both singing and playing piano at the Brookings Arts Council event December 7th, beginning at 5:30pm.

November 27, 2007

We've had a few inquiries about signing up to record yourself onto cd to be given as a gift.  We extended the due date to sign up for a time to do so thru Dec. 1.  Won't grandma and grandpa be happy to hear you playing or singing (you know how much they like to show you off)!  Oh yeah, it's a good gift for anyone else on your list as well!

November 26, 2007

Finally waking up from Turkey-induced-coma.... Glad to see so many of Brookings kids give a warm welcome to Santa as he arrived in town for the parade on Saturday.  He's especially glad that so many braved the cold temps to visit with him at the Santa House afterward (he likes it cold, but realizes he's a bit different in that respect!).  Remember, small groups such as daycares can make a weekday appointment to visit Santa thru Dec. 7.  And Dec. 1st and Dec. 8th has Santa visiting will any good boy or girl (or those on the border in-between) at his house.  Check out the CALENDAR section for times. Each visitor gets a special gift bag from Santa as well.... he's always generous this time of year!

November 21, 2007

Ten things we're thankful for this Thanksgiving (in no particular order):
1) Our family and their health
2) Our job
3) Santa choosing to stay at our Santa House on Main Street
4) Our teachers and their desire to get the best out of the student
5) A car that continues to run despite the odds
6) Most of our town and its citizens (sure, there's a few parts we're not quite as thankful for, but that's for another day)
7) Freedom
8) Each and every person who comes through our doors each week
9) Memories of loved ones
10) The fact that we're closed Thursday and Friday this week! (Well, we'll be working, just not teaching)

Count your own blessings!  HAPPY THANKSGIVING!

November 20, 2007

In honor of The Santa House, we've linked to the best Santa website around.  You can play games, read stories, and learn about Santa.  Best of all, it's very family friendly and doesn't even accept advertisers to hound you while visiting it.  It's been around a few years, but is still the best!  Pay attention on Christmas Eve when you can track Santa thru the NORAD system via this site.  It's under LINKS, or just click here to find out what it is!

November 19, 2007

The Santa House is going up on Main Ave today and tomorrow.  It'll provide a nice little home for Santa and his visitors this holiday season.  See him there after the Festival of Lights parade (he'll actually get off the float while in front of the house, so position yourself wisely....).  He'll also be there Sat. Dec. 1 from 10am-12pm and Sat. Dec. 8 from 12pm - 2pm.  People who have small groups and would like to make an appointment as a special outing to visit him, call us asap.  Wonderful fun for small to large daycares, area businesses, etc.  In the meantime, Santa thanks the local volunteers and Downtown Brookings for helping him feel welcome!

November 17, 2007
Any interested Let's Play student who studies piano, voice, or guitar can sign up at the studio to perform at the Festival of Trees Friday, Dec. 7th.  You would perform from the music you are already working on, just a song or two.  This is absolutely voluntary, but we like to let our students perform for others from time to time.  We have time slots from 5:30-8pm.  You can sign up in person at the studio, or email Randy with a time that would work for you!

November 15, 2007

There's a lot going on in the area surrounding our studio.  So here's your update:

The Gift Gallery and Fergen's (both currently on Main Ave.) are moving into the spot across the parking lot from us....formerly the Boys and Girls Club area.  And Tuli (also from Main Ave.) is moving into the spot directly behind us in the same building (next to where the Ritz resides).  Welcome to the neighborhood!

November 14, 2007

We're announcing the next Musical Theater Workshop for 5-10 year old boys and girls: "The Wizard of Oz" was chosen by popular demand!  We've decided to make it last thru December and January since there is a lot of fun things to cover.  The cost is $55 for one student, $45 for additional siblings.  We'll also cover the related musicals "The Wiz" and "Wicked" during this time.  Follow the yellow brick road and enroll now to reserve your spot!

November 13, 2007

The next newsletter is up under LINKS.  Instead of a monthly, we've made it a Nov/Dec. combo.  We figure with the holidays and all, you may only have time to read one piece of paper.  Isn't that considerate?

It mentions in the newsletter about a special on Gift Certificates.  Here's the scoop:

If you are an existing student buying for a current non-student:
Buy a Gift Certificate that includes registration and one month of lessons of any length to be used by the current non-student and get 50% of the total value applied to your own next invoice as well!  That includes friends or family....anyone who is not a current member of Let's Play!  It's like doubling the value, paying half-price, or getting half back!  We're no Grinch!

If you are a non-student buying for a current student:
Buy a Gift Certificate for more than $75 and receive a free Let's Play t-shirt (while supplies last).  Keep for yourself or give it to a PLAYer!

Questions? Just ask.  This offer is only advertised here on the BLOG (other BLOG only offers will be coming in later weeks as well!).  Gift Certificates must be purchased by Dec. 10, and expire in six months.  The 50% discount mentioned is applied on the Feb/March invoice
.

November 12, 2007
You may have noticed a change in our payment policy, effective with the Jan/Feb invoice.  A letter was sent with each invoice describing the change.  It basically will allow less hassle of remembering to pay on the student's end, while lowering the administrative costs on our end.  It is actually nothing new to us: this is the way we did billing during our years of running a studio outside Chicago.  But if you have any questions, just give us a call/email!

November 11, 2007

This week we are handing out surveys to each student.  Please take your time to fill it out, and return it at your next lesson!  It will only take a couple of minutes, but the information will allow us to serve you even better.  Thanks!

November 9, 2007

Random things:

The next newsletter should be up by Monday under LINKS.  Due to holidays and shorter time frame, it will cover info for Nov/Dec.

Beginning with the Jan/Feb invoice, we are implementing new methods of payment.  Current students should all have a letter of explanation along with their next invoice, and of course - call with questions.

Heidi has booked her trip to Penn State to see their final version of the musical GROUP, and will be taking flight mid-December for a couple of days.

The Santa House is still taking 'appointments' from daycares, preschools, businesses....any group of children to have their special time with Santa.  This is free, unique, and a memorable outing for the little ones.  Call Let's Play (Santa's letting us do the reservations) to book your time...but hurry!

Have a great weekend!

November 7, 2007

We know many of our students keep checking here for updates, and again we've got to plead guilty for not updating for a few days!  Randy judged at the Miss SDSU/Miss Brookings competition, which took a lot of time (but was fun, too).  We had some larger schedule changes to take care of.  And of course, we just kept putting it off until time allowed.  So....today's talk:  The Musical Theater Workshop.

It's been mentioned a few times, but it's great fun to work with these young 5-10 year old students.  We cover a new musical each month or so, and focus on several aspects of it.  For many it's the first time they've heard of it, or their first exposure to the music, or the first time they get to act/dance with it, etc. Our current "Charlie Brown" focus is off and running, though we always can add late-comers without any hassel.  We're also taking votes for upcoming classes: Peter Pan, Wizard of Oz, and Sound of Music are being mentioned, but we keep accepting new ideas.  If you have one, email/call the studio and let us know!

November 2, 2007

It's Friday, and while we've got some work to do this weekend, we hope you don't!  Except, of course, those who should work in a practice session or two!

In the meantime, a little known fact: Let's Play is a wireless 'hotspot.'   Which means that busy parents who want to do a little work on their computer or phone while waiting for a younger student can do so easily.  No strings (or cords) attached!  Have a great weekend!

November 1, 2007

Children everywhere are experiencing upset-stomachs and exhibiting anxious behavior.  Yes, it's the day after Halloween.  But we're now settling into our late fall time frame and things continue to keep hopping. Our new Musical Theater Workshop for age 5-10 begins next week.  We continue to see new faces joining us for instruction.  We've got student evaluations coming in December (more on that later).  And we're creating and hosting the Santa House (along with Downtown Brookings).  The Santa House is a unique chance for area daycares, preschools, homeschools, or businesses to make an appointed time to visit with Santa.  He'll be in a special house on Main Street, and is very excited to see the good boys and girls in Brookings!  Contact us or have your group contact us directly to book your time!  We'll have more information on this site in the coming days!

October 30, 2007

Music is everywhere the scares are this time of year!  Think of the theme to "Twilight Zone" or the da-dum....da-dum of "Jaws."  What about the famous music behind "It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown"?  You can find the music in the leaves falling to the ground, the crisp air, and the rhythm of footsteps as trick-or-treaters hit the sidewalks tomorrow night.  Enjoy!  Remember, no lessons Wednesday!  HAPPY HALLOWEEN!

October 29, 2007

Halloween week!  There was nothing more exciting than Halloween when we were little, and we hope that all of our littler ghosts and goblins have a great time!  As has been our tradition since the first day we opened our studio in Chicago, we do not have lessons on Halloween (Wednesday).  How can anyone focus on learning when there are scary stories to hear, costumes to prepare, and candy to get?

Several cases of strep throat are in the area, if what other parent's say is true.  We've said before that it's also cold & flu time.  Everyone takes their own precautions, but we remind all of our students to please wash their hands before starting their lesson, especially if just coming from school.  And we hope your Halloween costumes factored in space for a coat and hat, as the forecast is for a cold All Hallows Eve!

October 25, 2007
The next Musical Theater Workshop for our young students age 5-10 begins in November, so call to register asap to reserve a slot in the class.  The new class will focus on the child-friendly "You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown," with a chance for the participants to dive into the comic personalities!  Our current class focusing on "Annie" has been a blast, with students being exposed to mulitple facets of the play (story, music, dance, film clips, photos, and more).  It's a great way to create well-rounded base of arts knowledge, a very unique opportunity in the area.  We plan on continuing exposing young minds as we work with the old 'Blockhead' Charlie, Lucy, Linus, and of course...Snoopy!  See the Calendar or Links sections for info on deadlines, costs, etc.

October 24, 2007

We finally have the art up from our own local legend Ray Peterson.  He donated nearly 30 original theater art posters, featuring musicals from the last 30 years or so.  Ray would pick up these from Broadway productions he would attend on his annual journey east, and he's kept them in terrific condition!  No, these are not for sale (despite a couple of inquiries).  These are priceless, and the best art possible to add to our overall old-theater style.  So much more than a simple photo or painting, these demonstrate little pieces of the kinds of things we are exposing students to on a daily basis.  Next time you are at the studio, look up!  And thanks, Ray!

October 23, 2007

Some of you have noticed that Micah, our lead guitar instructor, has been gone for a few days.  No, we don't have him tied-up in the back.  He's actually attending conferences in Chicago and St. Louis.  These conferences are the main times of the year where colleges and universities nationwide choose performers to bring to their campuses.  Think things like the equivalents of Spring Fling or Hobo Day, but for a college in California, Ohio, or New York.  At any rate, we hope he gets some good gigs!  Micah is a great guitarist, for those who have been lucky enough to see him play locally.  In the meantime, we welcome Aaron Toronto as guest instructor for a few of Micah's students.  Aaron is a trained musician who's been playing for years as well!  He's also the person who wrote the story and some music to "Group" - the show Heidi worked on as well!

October 22, 2007

We've been a few days longer than normal between Blog posts.  Sorry!  We try not to let more than 3 days go by without updating things.  Lots of things going on, as always.  Today, we urge the adult readers to attend the SDSU production of Cabaret October 24-27.  Heidi acts as musical director, leading several musicians of various experience and skill levels.  Know that this show is aimed toward adults, so not a good one for the kiddies this time!  But support your SDSU theater, and take a look at why Heidi has been seen scrambling to Doner Auditorium every night after leaving here!

October 16, 2007

Heidi has been back for a few days and did indeed have a blast.  She's eager to see how Group turns out with such a fine group of talented people leading it.  She also returned with a few adjustments to things like changing the key to a song, losing or adding to parts of certain numbers, etc.  She also found out that Penn. State will be producing a soundtrack to the musical we'll be able to share with people someday.  SDSU will also be producing a soundtrack to Group, when they take it on this Spring.  Music to our ears!

October 12, 2007

It sounds as though our own fearless head of instruction, Heidi, is having a wonderful time at Penn. State. She will be returning this weekend with many stories to tell.  Group, the musical she's worked on with Aaron Toronto and has been years in the making, has been received extremely well.  The faculty around her are nearly all current or former Broadway performers - Tony winners included.  The school, located about 4 hours from NYC has quite the reputation for the arts, and many of the students there go right from graduation to Broadway.   Heidi is very excited to see her work performed by such accomplished performers, and can't believe how great the product is turning out!  Of course, local residents probably won't make it to the East coast to see the December production, and will be able to take it all in this February as part of SDSU's  Mainstage season.

October 9, 2007
Remember to let us know if you have any new contact information.  Cell phone, work phone, and emails can change often these days, and please keep us updated.  While it's a seemingly random thought, it comes after trying to reach a few students who no longer work where they did, changed cell phone numbers and switched email accounts.  Keep us in the loop!

Also, more importantly, Heidi and Aaron are flying to Penn. State tomorrow morning to meet the cast and crew of "Group" - their original musical.  If you recall, it was chosen by the prestigious school as one of the new musicals they will produce!  It's a rare opportunity (only 4 are chosen), and it will be performed for some off-Broadway people as well.  One of the 4 new musicals will then be produced off-Broadway by the York Theater!  They are thrilled to even have the opportunity, and it is quite a big deal.  Both Heidi and Aaron are Brookings residents and SDSU alumni, so I guess you really can go anywhere from here.

October 5, 2007

The October Newsletter is up under Links Section.  If you are fairly new to us, or missed a newsletter lately, we urge you to take a peek at each of them already posted.  We try to fill them with studio information and some fun tidbits as well.  Take a gander!

October 4, 2007

We've been getting many requests of late for our entertainment offerings, specifically singing telegrams. It's always a lot of fun dressing up and embarrassing people!  One would think that we would be embarrassed (you know, dressed up as Elvis or something), and trust us - that happens.  But that pales in comparison to how the recipients feel!  It usually goes something like this:  they laugh, blush, look at everyone in the room to see who is watching them laugh and blush, look away, laugh again, and start wondering who did this to them!  It never fails that it's the one moment of their day that they won't soon forget!  Who knew embarrassing people could make their day?

October 2, 2007

Today begins our first Musical Theater Workshop for ages 5-10.  This will be an exciting class, and we're just as excited to offer it.  The focus for this session is "Annie" and we'll be talking about the story, about the time-period (where else will your 5 year old hear about the Depression?), do lots of singing and dancing as well, and have lots of fun.  The Workshops are ways to expose the young ones to lots of new ideas or thoughts.  It may become a class we offer for older students as well with more mature discussions and participation.

Also, October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month.  Many of us know survivors of the fight, or of women struggling with it at this very moment.   Visit the Susan G. Komen website for information on this cancer, what you can do, and how to support others.  www.komen.org

September 28, 2007

It's so easy to miss things that are right in front of you.  We are always announcing student or teacher news, new classes, arts-related happenings in the community, important news regarding the arts, etc. One can't help but miss bits and pieces.  We try and put some of the biggest, most interesting, and most important items in the newsletters, on our bulletin board, and here on the web.  So keep checking.

Don't think you are the type to miss anything?  Next time you are exiting our business, look above the door... I bet you didn't see that before, right?  (Now you are all curious).  Have a GREAT weekend!

September 26, 2007

In upcoming weeks we will begin posting images of students and of some of the several events the studio and it's instructors are involved in.  Usually we're too busy in the action to pull ourselves away and take a photo.  So here's a call-out to students and their families: if you have any pix involving us, please let us know.  From parades, to classes, to weekly lessons, to camps, to singing telegrams, to costumed characters at parties....our students and staff have done a lot.  Now we'll see if anyone happened to capture any of it on film!

September 25, 2007

This afternoon, members of the Let's Play "Party Patrol" will be dressing up as pumpkins, jack-o-lanterns, and various scarecrows at a local private party.  And as we're stuffing goody bags for the kids and getting the scarecrow stuffing ready, it reminded us that some people still may not know about our entertainment offerings.  Singing Telegrams, Children's Parties, Wedding or Performance musicians and vocalists, Orchestration services, and even specialized entertainment planning like performers dressed as pumpkins, jack-o-lanterns, and various scarecrows for private parties (at least for today!). If you've seen Marilyn Monroe or Elvis around town, chances are you've seen our work.  If you've seen Santa Clause, it may have been our hand in helping him get here from the North Pole.  And today, if you see a walking, talking scarecrow, you've most definitely seen our work!  Check out more of our Entertainment Offerings by clicking the link at the top of the page!

September 24, 2007

Rainy days and Mondays always get us down.... and today it's BOTH!  Look out!  On the upside, we finally have bio information about our newest instructors added onto the website.  (Check out "About Us" section).  We now have many more "hot times" open on our schedule.  What is a "hot time" you ask?  That's those times that everybody seems to want for whatever reason.  Generally, it's in the 3:30-7pm area.  And we have several open as of right now, so contact Randy if you'd like to move to or start up in one of those times!

Also, remember this is the final week for registration for two of our classes: Beginner Drawing for ages 7-14 and 15 - adult, as well as Musical Theater Workshops for age 5-10 (with a focus on "Annie!

September 20, 2007
Is it cold or hot this week?  We can't decide, and neither can the weather. This is, however, the time when sicknesses creep into all of our lives: cold and flu season has begun.  So it's time to remind all of our students, regardless of age, to wash their hands!  We don't want germs to tag along to your lesson.  And don't be offended if you see our instructors wipe down keyboards, break out the anti-bacterial hand lotion, or request you to go wash up (if you forgot).  We ask them to do so, so that we don't spread germs from one student to the next!  Oh yeah, another tip direct from the doctor: sneeze or cough into the crook of your arm, NOT your hand, to avoid spreading germs.  This has been today's health care minute.

Our new Musical Theater Workshop class seems like it will be a hit!  We've gotten lots of positive feedback on the offering, which is aimed at 5-10 year olds.  It allows them to broaden their horizons, as they take something they may already know about (or not) and look at it from different angles.  Our first such class focuses on the musical favorite "Annie" with students singing the songs, acting out scenes, dancing, doing projects, and being exposed to the time period it occurred as well.  Check out the Links Section and view the Current Class Offerings for more info.  There are limited number of spaces, so enroll your young one(s) soon if interested!  By the way, this class is also one of the ways to get a discount as well.....just ask how when enrolling!

Sometimes students need to change their schedule time because of pesky things like school or work obligations.  "Thursdays no longer work, but can we try Mondays?"  We work with them to find the times that work best.  Given that we have multiple instructors, we can often make a schedule change with very little hassle.

But what about students who want to change their schedule time for no real reason whatsoever?  They just decide that 4pm, or 7pm, or Wednesday afternoons, etc. just aren't the greatest time for them.  Or they want to move to a different instructor with their friends.  Or they want to make a change just to shake things up a bit.  Don't worry... you can change for those reasons as well!

Just give us a call to see what's open on our end, and we can make a change asap...no questions, no hassels, no worries! It's just another great thing about our studio instruction!

There's a large number of our students who could save a lot of money, even as they become even more involved in the arts.  We write briefly about an option in the new newsletter, but feel free to ask Randy what you fits for you!  This comes to mind as I spoke to the parents of a student who was interested in having their child learn some vocal skills on top of their piano instruction.  They were thinking it would double the monthly bill.  WRONG!  We found a way for them to actually save more money by adding an appropriate class.  That's right - they will often be paying less than they would have without adding it, or just a few dollars more if at all!  So today's message:  it literally pays to ask!

September 11, 2007
More exciting news: we welcome a new instructor to the Let's Play family!  Jaret Stormo is a wonderful player (check out his recital coming this Winter) and we are lucky to have him join us as a lead piano instructor!  He is observing  this week and will be taking students beginning next week.  If you are interested in joining on his schedule, he still has some openings.  We'll get his biographic information together and posted at the studio and online with our other instructors soon.  Welcome Jaret!

The September Newsletter can be found under Links.  Of course it can be picked up at the studio as well.   Here's to a good week!

September 8, 2007
So...as this blog and website are always updated, what gives with it being more than a week since a new posting???  It's been a beyond crazy week, that's why!  First, nearly every student was changing times due to new obligations of the school year.  Second, a couple of instructors changed times as well.  Third, a couple of instructors had actual medical issues that needed attention.  (Heidi's emegency surgery proved successful and she is back at work and cancer free!!! - although she probably should not be so soon!)  All of these things led to the "Perfect Storm" of last minute changes that some students experienced.  Thanks for bearing with us over the last several days!  And if you weren't effected, or didn't notice much of a change... then we did our job better than we thought!  At any rate, look for the September newsletter at the studio or posted under the Links Section as of Monday (fingers crossed!). The Calendar section will also be updated, as well as our Class Offerings (under Links) over the weekend as well.  We also have some more exciting news to share in the coming days, so stay tuned! Now, we're off to the Harvest Festival where some of our students are providing entertainment this afternoon!  Have a great weekend!

Students have returned to shool once again, and adults have either unpacked from vacation - or never got to go in the first place.  That's right...the unofficial end of summer hits again.  Of course, we instruct year-round so we had to sneek in some summer fun when we could.  All in all, it was a great (if busy) season.  We moved to our new location, expanded our staff and instruction offerings, ran multiple summer camps for ages newborn thru 18 thru the Brookings Arts Council and Brookings Community Theater, started this website, added new original classes, and still managed to have regular instruction day-in and day-out.  Sometimes, it feels like you need a vacation from your vacation!  Thanks for a great summer to all of our students and camp goers!  Sure it was busy, but it was also a lot of fun!

When people want their child to learn how to play piano, or how to sing, or want them to enjoy a drawing class...they think of us.  (Thank you, by the way!)  But the one fact that startles some is that - are you sitting down? - WE WORK WITH ADULTS AS WELL!

You are never too old to learn.  We work with parents who have their interest sparked after their son or daughter starts instruction.  We work with teens who want to pursue music or the arts in college.  We work with people in their 30's, 40's, 50's and beyond who have just gotten to a point in their life where they decide to finally learn how to play piano, guitar or sing out in church.  We've worked with the elderly who realize that learning new things keeps their "brains sharp" at any age.   In short, just because you've graduated from school doesn't mean that the bloom is off the rose and "it's too late" too learn.

If you are an adult who's nervous to speak in public, or if you aren't as good at it as you know you could be, take theater (the twin brother of public speaking).  If you are an adult who used to play piano when you were young, but stopped and regret it - there's no time like the present.  If you would like to become a better artist or just have some fun, look at our Class List in LINKS and sign up for adult drawing (Grandma Moses didn't start until her 70's, right?)  We even let parents share lesson time with their children as a Special Request Group option, meaning discounted rates for all involved.

The point is, we encourage adults to learn new things and improve themselves thru the arts.  It's not too late.  But one day, it will be.

August 23, 2007

Our new radio ad can be heard here, or under LINKS.  (Suggestion: only listen if you have high speed internet, so as not to take forever to load!)

The first student featured is Francie, just 5 years old at the time it was made.  She's already got rhythms and note-reading skills which started when she began our Music & Me program for infants, toddlers, and their parents.  She's since "aged out" of that and into individual piano lessons.  Of course, she gets plenty of practice at home, too;)

The point: we can begin music lessons as early as age 5.  While it's not the standard Piano or Voice lesson, we work on the musicality of things - and students at that age pick up on many of the basics early.  Then when ready, we start focusing them more on the specific instrument.  Because of the groundwork of knowledge and experience they already have gained thru early involvement, they hit the ground running when they have the dexterity and focus to begin playing.  Young children are like sponges, quick to soak up the information.  And we do see students who are better players by age 7 than the 12 year olds who didn't begin taking lessons until they were much older.  Tomorrow's topic: teaching an older adult new tricks.

August 22, 2007

Our new radio ads began today, and I'll work on getting it posted under LINKS section - for those who don't listen to B93.7 at 7:45am!

August 21, 2007
A big thank you to Mr. Ray Peterson of SDSU for leaving some valuable art pieces in our care.  He came by to visit and talk business (Heidi is heavily involved with the music of the upcoming "Caberet" as well as "Group").  Ray has probably seen more Broadway shows than the rest of the midwest put together, and happened to get some souveniers from some of the productions.  He saw the many Show Posters we've attained - already up on our walls - and brought by dozens more of his own!  We're talking about the original Posters from the original runs of shows like Annie, Ragtime, Sunset Bullivard....some of which are even autographed by the actors!  Priceless...just like Ray!  Thanks, Mr. Peterson!

We've posted a listing of some of our many Current Class Offerings, which you can check out in the Links Section.  Keep checking back, as we'll update that link as new classes come along.  Most have limited space available and are hugely discounted over many other offerings!

August 19, 2007
How will the arts play a role in your life?  Heidi's brother Ted Heeren is also a singer/theater/guitar player whose found another unique way to mix them all together.  First, he runs a very successful and award-winning ad agency.  He's also been a longtime horticulture and journalism fan.  So what do you do with all of these talents?  Well, Ted created a weekly radio show called "The Rock Garden Tour" which mixes music, horticulture tips, and his theatrics, of course!  It was airing on Sioux Falls radio, and now it's been picked up by South Dakota Public Radio to air each week.  It just goes to show that you never know what will come from your arts instruction later in life!    Congrats, Ted!

August 17, 2007
One of our new Piano Classes is now full.  That only leaves 2 other classes at this point, so if you are on the fence about whether it's for you, now is the time to call!  Basically one class is for beginners (or those who have studied less than 6 months) and age 6-10.  The other class is for those age 7-12 who have studied piano for more than 6 months, and are in the first or second book of their series.  We keep these classes very small (less than a handful of students allowed) and at $29/month, it's also at a hugely discounted price.
Also, start listening for our radio ads beginning next week.  We're planning on featuring several of our students from all walks of life!  We'll also be sponsoring a weekly Arts Calendar each Thursday, covering all appropriate arts information.  Have an event you'd like submitted?  Contact us at the studio!

Attention to those who are planning on watching (and probably rewatching and re-rewatching) High School Musical 2 tomorrow:  check out tonight's Brookings Register for a special we're offering to new students.

August 15, 2007
Five days since my last post?  How does time fly go by so quickly?  I do plan on updating things every 1-3 days at least.  We always have new things going on, and realize that getting the info to you is important, and it should only take me 10 minutes to do!
At any rate, we have some exciting news for today.  Heidi Grimsley (owner and head of curriculum at studio) wrote music for a new musical with Aaron Toronto.  He came to us looking for help arranging a few songs, having written a solid script for a musical.  After some time, it became more of a collaborative relationship and Heidi used her songwriting and composing skills to help put together what has become "Group" - a new musical!
So now, after about three years of total efforts, SDSU decided to produce it next Spring as a Mainstage Musical!  That's right, look for the world premiere "Group" right in your own backyard!
And none other than Penn. State has now picked it up and will workshop it this Fall.  And from there....well, we'll keep you posted.   It's great news and fun that not only is much of the music written by Heidi, it again highlights the potential of the people who live right here in Brookings, SD!
(Sidenote: We may be offering a short class in Songwriting over the coming months: email/call to be notified if you are interested.).
For those who are curious, "Group" is a funny and heartwarming musical about the lives of several patients attending psychiatric sessions with a Dr. who should probably be getting some help himself. "Group  ...for your mental health."  Congratulations to Aaron and Heidi!

August 10, 2007
The latest newsletter is up under Links section.
Also, we have added new Piano Classes.  There are only 4 or so in each group, so call asap if you want to join.  The current options are: Mondays 5:30-6 or 6-6:30 for ages 6-10...Tuesdays  6-6:30 for ages 6-10....Tuesdays 5:30-6 for ages 7-12.  The 6-10 year old classes are intended for students new to piano, or with less than 6 months of study.  The 7-12 year old class is for those who have studied more than 6 months, or are in levels 1 or 2 of piano books.  All are flat rate classes at $29/month.  They can also be included toward earning a discount.
Which reminds me: people often ask about discounts.  Here's what is available:
        1) One student taking 2 or more offerings gets 10% off total
(ex. taking voice and adding piano class)
        2) Two or more students from a family taking 3 or more offerings get 10% off total
        3) The Brookings Children's Chorus ($22/month) is half price ($11/month) for anyone who takes other instruction, and it is counted toward earning a 10% discount.
         4) Our Special Request Group instruction fits most any of our offerings, and is significantly reduced in rate.  This is a shared lesson time with the friends or family you choose.
         5) We often have other specials going on for most budgets.  Things like Piano Class, Beginner and Advanced Drawing Class, etc. which are short term classes (1-2 months) and very inexpensive.  To find out more about those as they happen, ask to be on a mailing list (email, really), and check back to this website for updates!

Have a good weekend!  Summer is fading, so go catch some time outdoors (or sit inside by the air conditioner!)

August 7, 2007

Whew!  Just wrapped up our summer Boot Camp with a final showcase tonight at 7pm.  It went wonderfully!  We had 16 very talented performers age 8-14 who started the camp not knowing what to expect.  By the end, they put together a 16 song musical revue with singing, dancing, acting, and learning some of the basics of performing.  Some are naturals and some worked hard to get it down.  All did a great job and we hope they continue learning in the arts!  There's nothing more satisfying than seeing students of any age realize they have a lot more talent and skills than they may have thought.  We always believe everyone does, which is why we do what we do!  Anyway, Congratulations Campers!  Tomorrow we should have the August newsletter under the Links Section (it's been here at the studio for a while, but the camp kept us away from our website for a few days)!

July 31, 2007
Lots of things happening at Let's Play, as always!  First, the Advanced Drawing class is soon to begin, so contact us if interested.  The cost is $20 for the entire class, and it's only open to 7-14 year olds. We're also on day 3 of Performance Boot Camp, with a very talented group of performers who are molding themselves into an ensemble.  They will be performing a look at some of Broadway's best music, held at the BHS Auditorium on Tuesday, August 7.  It's a LOT of fun, both for us and for the participants who are working long days (and practicing on their own at night!)  They are great!  Finally, we have a new Music and Me session that will begin on Fridays, starting Aug. 10.  This is the infant - preK age class, with the parent/guardian involved.  Rates are discounted and it's being instructed by the programs creator Heidi Grimsley, which is kind of like having a book read to you by the author!  A rare treat!  That's it for now....the Boot Camp is an all day every day camp, so this week there's a lot of late hours going on (and a lot of coffee consumption).  But email or phone with a message and we'll still do our best to get back to you in a timely manner!

July 25, 2007

Well, we're wrapping things up for the Let's Play Scavenger Hunt today.  Suffice it to say that over 100 people took part in this event, all of them giving it their all.  We were suprised at how many of the things people could find.  Did you know several people in town still have neon leg warmers, the Grease soundtrack on LP, and 8-tracks?  And many contestants either had - or knew somebody who had - cuckoo clocks, Viking bobble head dolls, and Jimi Hendrix posters.  Every item and point really counted, as contestants were often only a few points apart!

Thanks to all of the people who entered, and all of the people who helped them get their bounty! Special thanks to those who unwittingly ended up as part of the contest - the employees at Hy-Vee, Wal-Mart, and Grant Peterson of Brookings Radio for being in photos for some of the hunters, and the swimmers posing with a clown for a photo!  If you have to ask what that means, you obviously didn't check out the list of items!

We were proud to create and sponsor the contest and hope to see all of the entrants next year as well! In the  meantime, remember us for your arts instruction and entertainment needs!  Just because you didn't win, doesn't mean you can't still learn to play piano, guitar, sing, or one of our other offerings!

CONGRATULATIONS TO THE VICTORIOUS HUNTERS

Grand Prize Package Winner (Choice of Yamaha Keyboard or Fender Guitar, 6 months of instruction in the instrument, and 6 months of voice instruction):
                                                                                                   Ann/Molly Foster of Brookings.

First Place Runner Up Winner (Minneapolis Getaway from Brookings Radio, including hotel stay, 6 tix to Valleyfair, the Park at Mall of America, and Underwater Adventures):
                                                                                                        Chelsea Ahlers of Brookings.

Second Place Runner Up Winner (Brookings Register Prize Pack, including tickets to Thunder Road, Catfish Bay, and Register Gift Subscription):
                                                                                                                Andy Finck of Brookings.

It was fun for all, as the entrants all pointed out!  We were proud at how all well all the Hunters did!
Stay tuned for information on other contests, specials, and news about our instruction in the future!

July 24, 2007

Congratulations to all who took part in the Let's Play Scavenger Hunt!  I'll be posting up some results and info in the next couple of days.  For now, suffice it to say that the Hunters really went all out.  It was neck and neck in many cases.  We even had a couple of people who actually had a suit of armor (who'da thunk it?).  I'll wrap it all up soon, and get back to the normal routine.  In the meantime, all hunters should be proud -- they had fun and made it fun for us, too!  Thanks!

July 19 - 22, 2007 - THE HUNT IS ON!

Let the Games begin!  People can now pick up the List of Items, Rules, and Registration Form from Let's Play, Brookings Radio, or The Brookings Register.  And the items will remain posted thru the contest under Links as well as at www.brookingsradio.com.  Many people may not start the Hunt until Sunday, so it will be interesting to see how this turns out!  Those Sunday Hunters can be ruthless!

Before you begin, some reminders:

It is not how many items you turn in, but how many points they are worth!
Keep in the spirit of the game, play nice!
